Lamb Marine Lab Presents at Galapagos Science Center Symposium

On July 14th and 15th, members of the Lamb Marine Lab, including rising senior Melanie Gomez, presented at the 7th annual Galapagos Science Center symposium.

Hosted at the Charles Darwin Convention Center, attendees learned about current research conducted on the Galapagos islands. Presenters discussed a broad range of topics including conservation, biodiversity, and public health. Among the 50 presentations, Melanie Gomez presented her research entitled: Top-down vs bottom-up control on competitive dynamics amongst benthic communities across a wave exposure gradient.

Dr. Robert Lamb was a keynote speaker at the symposium, giving a presentation on the causes of food web changes in the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

Additionally, Lamb Marine Lab’s Vladimir Garmendia of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUCE) gave a presentation on an important area of the ocean called the mesophotic zone. This is a region that has limited understanding as it is 30 to 150 meters below sea level, yet it contains numerous reef fish communities that are critical to the Galapagos ecosystem.
